Welcome to the New York Institute for Special Education join us in celebrating our 185th year anniversary as we take a look at an essential part of our school that's made us who we are today  the Residential Program focused on providing academic enrichment and assistance to residential students the after-school program offers a variety of settings that foster academic achievement  from about 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. students work with staff specifically trained to enhance the learning of  individuals who are blind and visually impaired  with a little guidance students make use of low vision devices and assistive technology to complete homework study for classes and prepare for exams but I get out of a residential program is I get help with my homework a lot and also when I'm at home I'm out all my friends. With all my friends in the dorm are and here I have lots of staff to help me with my homework Students also attend tutoring 3 days out of the week where they meet with Middle school and High School teachers for review in subject areas such as ELA, math and social studies to ensure students Advance through the New York State Common Core curriculum also after school residential staff meeting with students at the library to review class assignments assist with homework and research projects Later in the evening staff focuses on making sure students develop essential independent daily living skills has prepared me for college Play Future life experiences because they focus on cooking cleaning residential students in disability specific instruction by staff of food preparation and management and self management and areas such as personal hygiene and clothing care it feels good to be worse than you because you get to be lot of independence from traveling off-campus by yourself with no help you know I traveled off-campus before on mobility trips on a train and you have to know your key technique you have to know how to get off campus watch out for cars crossing the streets the right way without walking into the street so the cars that are still in motion.  Here at the New York Institute for special education we encourage Independence while striving to provide an unrestricted yet safe experience for all of our students Mobility instructors work diligently with students to ensure that they learn technical skills that help Individuals with visual impairments integrate in their communities and travel independently.   Orientation and mobility classes help our students develop skills that are all about traveling safely in the community and business areas and on public transportation These skills generate important route and problem-solving capabilities the grant our students the knowledge to navigate once asked questions such as where am I where am I going and how will I get there important questions that help ensure the safe travels of our students from and to our campus but the residential program is it all work and no play students engage in many therapeutic recreation activities that range from group events such as card playing, and cheerleading and sports such as bowling, wrestling and basketball. Score!  Students participate in many activities that promote appropriate social interactions with peers and with the community and in the spirit of creating a team effort environment students are joined by residential staff in many of these activities that way everyone can join in on the fun and we mean everyone
