Camp Wanaqua campers had a chance today to learn about a special sport called Goalball. It’s a team sport played at The New York Institute and by many schools across the United States. It’s a recognized sport in the Paralympics and many countries around the world field teams.
Goalball is a sport for athletes with visual impairments. It is played by two teams of three using a ball with bells inside. The ball is the size of a basketball but twice the weight. The object of the game is to throw the ball into the opposing team's net, while defenders attempt to block it with their bodies.
The Eastern Athletic Association for the Blind holds an annual tournament for schools for the blind. This year, NYI took second place in the boys division and third place with the girls team.
