The NYISE Re-opening Plan for the 2020-21 School Year
The New York Institute for Special Education (NYISE) has as its core value the health and safety of our students, families, and staff members. Educational opportunities are not possible unless we have this as our primary focus. To prepare for school to re-open on the campus in the fall we reviewed the documents from the New York State Education Department, the New York State Department of Health, and the guidance from the Center for Disease Control (CDC).
NYISE started developing a plan for re-opening in March. All areas of the campus were reviewed with the Management Team. To get additional input NYISE met with staff members from all programs on the campus, parents from each program, and students who are officers in the Student Government. The plan for reopening was discussed with the Alumni Association at their annual meeting and the NYISE Board of Trustees reviewed and discussed the plan.
The past several months have been challenging for the students, their families, and the staff. The Institute believes in the quote by Helen Keller “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much”. This spirit was demonstrated each day during the pandemic. I want to thank the teachers and staff for working together to support the students. I also want to thank the parents for their assistance. At times things were not perfect but we all worked together. It is our hope that we will be back to in-person classes in the fall but if this isn’t possible, we will continue to support the students’ learning at home.
With best wishes, Bernadette M. Kappen Executive Director
