South Street Seaport Museum engages visitors in the maritime history of New York City, and provides on-the-water education aboard its historic schooners. Thanks to a grant from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, they have developed and implemented a program about the Hudson River Estuary. The Museum has consciously devised a multi-sensory program using teaching materials that students could touch, smell, hear, and in some cases, taste. In these photos, you will find NYISE’s 6th and 7th graders engaged in opportunities to raise sails, coil lines, and studying some of the sea life of the estuary.
