In 1959, NYI started a new expansion project on east and west sides of Schermerhorn. What we now call the auditorium, music room and boardroom was in this construction project a very modern library. The small gym and link areas was an expanded gymnasium. The original Schermerhorn gymnasium was in a level below the current basement. This construction project also gave us the swimming pool and a running track. The running track around the pool was eliminated a few years ago when the McMahon Gymnasium was built.
