Residential Program & Admissions

Residential students visit the New York Botanic Garden.
To be enrolled in the Residential Program, a student must be enrolled in the Schermerhorn Program and identified through the IEP process as a child who requires a structured living environment on school grounds 24 hours a day.  To learn about this identification process, visit the New York State Education Departments website by following this external link https://www.schools.nyc.gov/learning/special-education/school-settings/other-educational-settings

All students placed in the program live in dormitories on our campus from Monday through Thursday, returning home on weekends and holidays. From 3 pm on, students work with Residential staff to review homework and material learned during the school day.

In the evenings, staff provide direct instruction, teaching students ADL skills, including food preparation and management, personal hygiene, and clothing care. Additionally, Residential staff accompany students on field trips, helping them learn how to navigate independently, travel off campus, and strengthen their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Connecting with students' families to ensure students practice skills they learn in the program at home, Residential staff also work closely with parents and caregivers to develop goals for each student that shift as each child progresses through their development.
