Schermerhorn program at the New York Institute for special education offers students ages 5 to 21 with a visual impairment or blindness and academic program that file the New York State learning standards the program has been educating students with visual impairment or blindness for over a hundred and eighty years divided into an elementary middle and high school Schermerhorn offers students of varied and challenging curriculum the overall goal of the program is to provide high-quality educational experiences that will assist students in being independent from adapted physical education through regions classes and New York State exams to technology lab students have opportunities that help them face the challenges of the globe world all of our students participate in New York state assessments including the third through eighth grade New York State Ela and math assessments 4th and 8th grade New York State Science assessment our high school students all take the necessary Regents classes and exam that will afford them a New York state Soma a variety of extracurricular activities are offered to ensure that students are well-rounded the students participate in sports student council and perform an annual winter and spring music shows along with art exhibits students participate in career and Vocational classes to develop skills necessary for competitive employment pre-vocational training takes place in various departments on and off campus our students enjoy attending school on hours 17 acre campus where they are able to participate in reaching activities such as bowling swimming gardening and golf if you would like further information about summer lunch program at the New York Institute for special education or would like to set up a tour to visit our school please contact Ivette Feliciano at 7 18519 7000 extension 378 or Margarita man's at 718-519-7000 extension 312
