Library Program

Each week, Schermerhorn students take library classes with our Librarian to learn about the different types of literature, including fiction, non-fiction, and poetry.

As part of their studies, students also explore story telling and writing by meeting with visiting authors, listening to their stories and learning about about what inspires a person to become a published author.

Through these experiences, students increase their knowledge and have opportunities to strengthen their attention span, concentration, and memory recall ability, as well as practice their writing, language, and vocabulary skills.

Educator Highlight: Alana Andresen

Alana Andresen is our Schermerhorn Librarian and leads our Library Program. In addition to teaching library classes, Alana manages to libraries collection and curates engaging programing with students in grades K-12. Additionally, Alana leads wellness programming for students and staff in the libraries sensory friendly quiet space.

Spanning six weeks from March - April 2024, the Institute partnered with the Andrew Heiskell Braille and Talking Book Library and the Whitney Museum to provide students with hands-on visual arts learning experiences exploring the following paintings and sculptures:

In addition to creating their own artwork inspired by these pieces, students also took field trips to the Andrew Heiskell Braille and Talking Book Library and the Whitney Museum in Manhattan, learning from educators at both organizations.
