Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC)

All Schermerhorn K-12 students participate in Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) lessons and activities addressing the nine universal educational needs for students with visual impairments and enriching New York State curriculum.

These needs include:

  • Compensatory Access Skills
  • Self-determination
  • Sensory Efficiency
  • Assistive Technology
  • Social Interaction
  • Career Education
  • Independent Living Skills
  • Orientation and Mobility
  • Recreation and Leisure

ECC components are designed to help students compensate for their decreased opportunities to learn incidentally by observing others and skills are taught sequentially and thoughtfully.

Teachers, child care workers, and therapeutic recreational specialists plan and supervise all ECC activities.
