The students took part in a nature conservation project on the Bronx River to enhance the ecosystem. In these pictures students are checking eel mops that are set in the water near the 182 street dam that give refuge to young eels during their 1500 mile migration. The eels hide out in the mops and rest before continuing their journey up river. In the pictures, you can see special ramps called u201Ceel laddersu201D that eels use to get over the dams along the river. Eels grow 3 to 5 inches a year and an adult can be up to 3 feet long.
