It was a chilly windy rainy day for our annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk. The weather did not dampen our spirits. The students and staff took to the gymnasium track to walk for miles in support of the cause and fundraising. Cupcakes and snakes were sold to raise additional funds.
Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj came to give us his support and thank the students for their participation.
The day ended with some touching moments with the family of Justin Bryant (2001-2016). This beloved Schermerhorn student passed recently but his brief life left his mark on many of us. The time he spent with us was one filled with challenges to his health but we remember him as a young man filled with smiles and positive energy.
One of his essays was displayed that gave us all his challenge. He wrote, u201CI challenge you to go and touch the lives of other in the same way that I have tried to touch yours. Inspire others to achieve the unachievable and never give up.u201D
Many members of his family joined the NYISE family to dedicate a bench for the campus grounds and a tree was planted that will forever remind us of this blessed soul.

Photographer: James Rivera
