The NYI "Little Stars" 6th Annual
Basketball Tournament
Feb. 5 & 6, 2008

Competing in this tournament were St. Lucy, Santa Maria, NYI and Visitation Schools.

The tournament was dedicated in honor of Black History Month to the 3 players from the Bronx who were on the 1966 NCAA Basketball Champions at Texas Western College. On March 19, 1966, an upstart squad of five African-American players beat an all-white Kentucky team 72-65 to win the NCAA Basketball Championship, breaking the color barrier in college sports.

This historical event is depicted in the movie "Glory Road". The Bronx players were named Willie Worsley, Nevil Shed and Willie Cager.

Brian shows off his new brother and his little sister below enjoys the outing.

Congratulations to Santa Maria for winning the championshipo by defeating NYI 17-9 and to Steve McPhillips who won the Tournament MVP Award. Congratulations to Brice Banks and Antonio Lowden of NYI who were name to the All-Tournament Team.

Special thanks to coaches Rich Scotti and Ed Roach for their efforts in making this a great season.

In the event program, Dr. Bernadette Kappen wrote:

"Each team has worked hard during the season to develop new skills in handling the basketball, dribbling, guarding and shooting. The most important skill is growing as a team. Being a part of a team is preparation for life. You learned about each athlete's talent and then you worked together to win a game. Winning is important to everyone but demonstrating a postive team spirit and good sportsmanship is what makes each of you so special. I want to thank all the coaches for supporting the students during the season."
