The Flagpole

Flag Pole Dedication 1945

In the aftermath of the second World War, blinded veterans received rehabilitation trainng at the Institute. In 1945, George Durand a 19 year old Marine from San Francisco dedicated the Institute's new assembly flag at the Flag Day Ceremony. PFC Durand was an eyewitness to the historic raising of the American Flag at Iwo Jima shortly before his injuries blinded him.

This image shows the flag pole in the front of Schermerhorn. This picture predates the Pelham Parkway service road.

The current walkway to the flagpole was a little bit of a mobility problem for some of our students. Currently, it is being replaced with a new pathway.

Once completed, it will make a beautiful addition to our campus.
