Barack Obama's thoughts on the war of
Iraq
:
I
made a different judgment. I thought our priority had to be finishing the fight
in
Afghanistan
. I spoke out against what I called "a
rash war' in
Iraq
. I worried about, ‘an occupation of
undetermined length, with undetermined costs, and undetermined consequences.’
The full accounting of those costs and consequences will only be known to
history. But the picture is beginning to come into focus.
Plans for the troops:
Obama will immediately begin to remove our troops from
Iraq
. He will remove one to two combat brigades
each month, and have all of our combat brigades out of
Iraq
within 16 months. Obama will make it clear that we will not build any permanent bases in
Iraq
. He will keep some troops in
Iraq
to protect our embassy and diplomats; if al Qaeda attempts to build a base within
Iraq
, he will keep troops in
Iraq
or elsewhere in the region to carry out
targeted strikes on al Qaeda.
Education goals:
Obama's comprehensive "Zero to Five"
plan will provide critical support to young children and their parents. Unlike
other early childhood education plans, Obama's plan
places key emphasis at early care and education for infants, which
is essential for children to be ready to enter kindergarten. Obama will create Early Learning Challenge Grants to promote
state "zero to five" efforts and help states move toward voluntary,
universal pre-school.
Obama will make college affordable for all Americans by creating a
new American Opportunity Tax Credit. This universal and fully refundable credit
will ensure that the first $4,000 of a college education is completely free for
most Americans, and will cover two-thirds the cost of tuition at the average
public college or university and make community college tuition completely free
for most students. Obama will also ensure that the
tax credit is available to families at the time of enrollment by using prior
year's tax data to deliver the credit when tuition is due.
Immigration
The
time to fix our broken immigration system is now… We need stronger enforcement
on the border and at the workplace… But for reform to work, we also must
respond to what pulls people to
America
… Where we can reunite families, we should.
Where we can bring in more foreign-born workers with the skills our economy
needs, we should

Health Care
We
now face an opportunity — and an obligation — to turn the page on the failed
politics of yesterday's health care debates… My plan begins by covering every
American. If you already have health insurance, the only thing that will change
for you under this plan is the amount of money you will spend on premiums. That
will be less. If you are one of the 45 million Americans who don't have health
insurance, you will have it after this plan becomes law. No one will be turned
away because of a preexisting condition or illness.
Technology and Innovation for a New Generation
“Let us be the
generation that reshapes our economy to compete in the digital age. Let's set
high standards for our schools and give them the resources they need to
succeed. Let's recruit a new army of teachers, and give them better pay and
more support in exchange for more accountability. Let's make college more
affordable, and let's invest in scientific research, and let's lay down
broadband lines through the heart of inner cities and rural towns all across
America.”
