Health Services

 

Health Services is staffed by Professional Registered Nurses and complemented by support staff in areas of medicine such as pediatrics, psychiatry, ophthalmology and optometry. The role of Health Services is to strengthen and facilitate the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of children and by identifying and removing or modifying health related barriers to the learning process. Health Services is especially prepared and uniquely qualified in emergency care, preventive health health assessment and referral procedures. Medical services offered at the NYISE are not meant to replace services currently used by students, but to complement that care.

IMMUNIZATIONS
In order to attend school, students of all ages must meet NYC immunization requirements. Different age groups will have different requirements. Check with your private physicians regarding your child's immunization needs. Children who are not up-to-date with their immunization may not be allowed to attend school.

MEDICATION
Health Services will administer medication that is properly labeled and accompanied by a doctor's order. The doctor's instructions and the label on the bottle must match. Any over-the-counter medicine will have to follow the same guidelines as prescribed medicine. The doctor's order can be delivered with the medicine, faxed to Health Services or called into Health Services by the doctor. Health Services fax number is 718-654-6906. Drop off or pick up or medication can take 24 hours a day during the school week with the nurse. Parents can also drop off or pick up medicine with the security booth located on the Astor Avenue side of the campus 24 hours a day when school is not in session.
Please DO NOT send medicine in with the students.

SICK CHILDREN
If a student becomes sick at school and cannot be in class, he/she will need to go home. Health Services will call the parent and arrange a pick up time. Health Services encourages parents to have an alternate person available and plan of action should the need arise for pick-up of a student.

If a student is absent from school, a note from the parent and or doctor needs to be submitted to Health Services. Students should be fever free for 24 hours without the aid of a fever reducing medication before returning to school. 
Please DO NOT send a sick child into school.

MEDICAL CONCERNS
Health Services realizes it can be difficult for parents/guardians to decide whether to send children to school when they do not feel well. A child who is sick will not be able to perform well in school and may spread the illness to other children and staff. If your child stays home' because of illness, please call the 'secretary, Rosemary, before 9:00. The number is 718-519-7000 ex. 600

If your child .is absent due to a medical reason, such as a contagious illness or injury for three or more consecutive days, a doctor's note is required to allow your child to return to school. The note needs to be submitted to Health Services. Even if a doctor's note is not required, please send a note to the child's teacher explaining the reason for any absence.
PLEASE DO NOT SEND A SICK CHILD ON THE SCHOOL BUS TO BE SEEN BY THE NURSE OR DOCTOR IN SCHOOL.

 

The Department of Health mandates that each child have an annual physical exam and current immunization record on file with the school. Parents are responsible for providing the school with these records. Any child who does not have a current physical on file may be asked to remain at home until a physical is completed and documentation of such is on file with the school.
