Children Learn about Transportation and Trucks

It's an annual tradition at NYISE for 100 pre-school and elementary students to hop aboard fire engines -- cherry pickers and other big wheels. It's important for the kids to become acclimated to certain sensations to make life easier when they're out of school. Readiness Program Principal Barbara Philipps says "it's important because the children, often when they're outside with their families, they get very scared of unusual noises or sudden noises and loud noises, so by coming here in a calm and relaxed time when it's not an emergency, it desensitizes them to those sounds and sights." The event catered to students with visual impairments along with emotional and developmental disabilities.
