White Cane Safety Day is a national observance in the United States, celebrated on October 15 of each year since 1964. The date is set aside to celebrate the achievements of people who are blind or visually impaired and the important symbol of blindness and tool of independence, the white cane.

At NYISE, we celebrate it with a parade up and down Pelham Parkway and a mobility related scavenger hunt. Parents are encouraged to attend and participate and many walk proudly with their children. Prior to the parade, the student make posters and signs to carry during the parade.

The children look forward to the event and enjoy being stars of the parade each year.
